Tamaperl

Introduction

Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is calcium carbonate produced by calcining and slaking natural limestone with various reaction conditions.
PCC is available for controlling the crystal type, the particle shape and the particle diameter, so it is used in various fields.
The Tama Pearl has been developed as filler and pigment for paper making, and it receives a high reputation from home and overseas customers
Okutama Kogyo will expand PCC business worldwide to meet customer's needs.

Concept

  1. Produce worldwide competitive paper products
  2. Cost-cutting by loading more PCC and less pulp
  3. Stable supply of high quality PCC
  4. Design a technically excellent PCC plant

PCC trend in the world

  1. Filler grade
PCC has become the filler of choice for many paper papermakers throughout the world, it is replacing GCC or talc.
When PCC is used in paper manufacturing process, the machine speed, productivity and paper quality is likely to increase.
  2. Pigment grade
The demand for pigment PCC has been increased.

PCC as filler

Performance of PCC-filled Paper

Higher filler content When PCC is used with the retention agent, paper strengthen agent and neutral sizing agent, it is possible to keep paper quality due to its narrow particle size distribution and uniform particle shape.
High brightness PCC is made by calcining natural limestone, so it will provide increased sheet brightness due to intrinsic whiteness, brightness, and chemical purity of the PCC itself.
High opacity When PCC is used as filler, a large number of pores are created within the paper structure, and this porous matrix provides increased opacity due to its high degree of internal reflection and refraction.
Bulky paper
PCC will spread uniformly throughout the pulp, so it provides increased sheet caliper (bulk) due to its narrow particle size distribution and uniform particle shape.

Property of filler PCC

Crystal shape Spindle type
Particle size 3-5 micron
Chemical formula CaCO3
Slurry content 30 wt%
Viscosity under 500cps
Brightness (ISO) 97%

PCC as pigment

Performance of PCC-coated Paper

High brightness PCC is made by calcining natural limestone, so it will provide increased sheet brightness due to intrinsic whiteness, brightness, and chemical purity of the PCC itself.
High opacity By controlling particle size, it is possible to increase smoothness and provides opacity due to its excellent light scattering ability.
Good printability PCC coated paper has good printability resulting from its more uniform and smoother surface.

Property of pigment PCC

Crystal shape Spindle or Acicular type
Particle size 0.3-0.6 micron
Chemical formula CaCO3
Slurry content 70 wt%
Viscosity under 300cps

Raw material

Key to control PCC brightness and particle size

CaO PCC is made from high purity calcium carbonate rock (limestone).
There is necessity to select the ore and research the calcining process.
CO2gas Limestone is calcined in a kiln, separating lime and carbon dioxide gas (CO2). CO2 gas can be captured for reuse.
There is necessity to research the condition of CO2 gas whether it contains acid components or soot which causes low brightness.
Water Lime is added to water to form calcium hydroxide.
There is necessity to research water quality (content elements).
